Alopecia (Hair Loss) Treatment

Alopecia (Hair Loss) Treatment

Hair loss can be divided into disorders in which the hair follicle is normal but the hair growth cycle is abnormal (non-scarring alopecia) and disorders in which the hair follicle is damaged (scarring alopecia). Male and female pattern hair loss (non-scarring) is the most common cause of hair loss in men and women respectively. Other disorders include alopecia areata, telogen effluvium, cicatricial alopecia, lichen planopilaris, frontal fibrosing alopecia and traumatic alopecias.

The diagnosis of hair loss is usually based on a thorough history and scalp examination. In some patients, selected laboratory tests or punch biopsy may be necessary. At our practice for hair loss treatment in New York City, these tests and diagnoses can be performed after scheduling an appointment.

Treatment for alopecia is determined by the type of alopecia and includes topical minoxidil, spironolactone, finasteride, corticosteroids etc. Telogen effluvium is often a self-limited disorder.
